Cat Cafes in Korea
I can’t recall the first time I heard about cat cafes. Perhaps it was through a friend who had recently been to South Korea, or while surfing the net late one evening. In any case, the idea of having coffee in a room teeming with adorable felines was heaven for a cat lover like me.
I remember the first time I stepped foot into a cat cafe. It was in Hongdae, a University area in Seoul, South Korea, and nestled away in an alley. I was overwhelmed by the many different breeds of cats- how they occupied every inch of the cafe and interrupt conversations between couples by napping in the middle of their table.
Cat Cafes Near Home
Vancouver, BC now has a cat cafe of their own after many years of trying to get approval from the city and finding a location suitable (and to code) for hosting cats in a cafe. However awesome it is to finally have one closer to home, it is not comparable to the Korean cat cafes I’ve been to. In Korea, cats roam freely among the patrons doing as they please and customers can enjoy their coffee and some snacks around the cats. In Vancouver, cats are in a separate room and there are usually only a couple cats to play with. The reason for the difference has a lot to do with regulations, and the cats in Vancouver’s Catfe are available for adoption.
Not interested in cats? South Korea has a cafe for any type of animal lover. Fancy spending time with some sheep, raccoons, tortoises, or dogs? I’ll include a list of other places you can visit at the bottom of the page!
